Designing in 100 degrees

Thought I'd post what I've been busy with today. Have been getting my portfolio reassembled for something. I really want some good design work in there-- These are 2 I am considering. The color on the ape got a little blow out, plus I need to smooth it out a bit more. Anyway, just for fun! Cheers!!

Hmm something... Anyway, I actually really liked the coloring of the ape, and I really love his facial expression.

Man 3 posts within a week, your on fire! Please keep it up, this is basicly the only animation site I know and it has been so incredibly helpfull to me, can't tell you how much I appreciate all this!

Oh and the delay is no problem, I'm a patient guy.

looking good!!! I like the facial expression of the ape too. The coloring makes it a bit hard to understand his right arm position. Really cool designs!

Your portfolio is really going to rock! I Hope you're putting in what you are being posting lately :)

Is always so hard to decide for one drawing that you like but don't fit so good with the others :)

May I have a request?

I would really like to know your insights about how long, what kind off material an animation portfolio should have?

Anyway, as always...thanks to share

Steve! Thanks bud! It's encouraging for me to hear! I still wanna get together and have you look at some stuff.

Maarten: Thanks man! I'm glad you liked the drawings. I am so glad that you feel this blog has been helpful! That's why I do it :)

Joonas: Thanks man, yea, your right. I crapped up the value on the arm. Your eye goes right to that darkness instead of the story happening between the mirror and his facial expression.

MArcos: Thanks! I hope that my portfolio is at least compitent :) I haven't had to put a portfolio together in a while so this has been fun for me!
As far as what to put in a portfolio EVERYONE will tell you something different so take my advice with a grain of salt. I personally feel that that everyone should be at least good at everything (I myself do not even live up to this, unfortunately). Even if you want to be an animator, being good at design tells me that your going to have solid drawing in your animation, as well as the ability to go beyond the model sheet in terms of "pushing the poses". Having story (or at least story telling designs) tells me you look for that in your animation, the micro storytelling point of your particular shot. Art is cyclical, and I feel it's prohibitive to only concentrate on 1 thing. Why limit yourself?
On the other hand I know plenty of studios who don't care whether you can do anything beyond what they want to hire you for. I feel that this is dangerous, and short sighted. What I admire about places like Pixar is they seem to really value WHO YOU ARE as an artist. If you sent them a reel full of rat animation to try and get on "Ratatouille" they would know immediately that you are not what they are looking for. The best advice I could ever give is perhaps overly philsophical, but still true: Be you! Don't put a portfolio together to get a job, put one together to tell them who you are. Does that help?

Very nice designs Matt really like the shapes and how they play off each other best of luck with the portfolio but I'm sure you'll just fine all best and take care!!!

Hi Matt

Your answer has gone beyond my expectations, everybody could have told me that I should put 4 pages or figure drawing,3pages of animal...

I appreciate your advice of be your self as an artist an you saved me a lot of time I was making tons of feet of animation with penguins for my reel :)

Hmmm I know I've emailed you and I'm patient, for now I've got this one small question though.
Anyone feel free to answer haha.

Animation films are always animated with 24 frames a second. But now I've read a lot about twos and ones and I am kind of confused, is an animation movie shot at ones or twos?

And for the people that haven't seen me around yet yeah Im new to animating.

Thanks a lot.

Matt Williames said...

maarten: Yea, all film runs at 24 frames per second, animation is no exception.
What 2's and 1's are is this: if a drawings is on 2's that means the drawing is held for two frames of film. If a drawing is on 1's it is held for 1 frame of film. A lot of times when animating you will use a lot of both, but almost never anything higher than 2's (at least for a more traditional disney style). So, if you have all drawings on 2's, you will only need 12 drawings to make up one second. If your animation is all on 1's you will need 24 drawings to make aseond of film. Does that make sense?

Yeah it does, thanks a lot for the explanation cause the site where I read about this wasn't being to clear about this.

Hmm but does it happen often that an animator goes all ones or all twos or is it most of the time a combination?

Which would mean I would have to name my frames 1,3,5,7 etc and I could decide to go at ones at a certain point?

Hmm as difficult as all this sounded to me when reading it for the first time, i'ts kind of coming together now.

I still not fully understand how to 'read' the spacing chart but as soon as I know I'll be making a ball test.

Again, thanks so much for helping me with this, it's good that there are people like you that are willing to share their knowledge!
